Space Rangers: Quest Introduction:
Space Rangers, known as "Космические рейнджеры" in Russian, is a versatile computer game developed by the Russian company Elemental Games and published by 1C Company in 2002. It features a blend of gaming genres, including turn-based strategy, text-based quests, and arcade elements. While it has garnered critical acclaim and enjoys popularity in its home country, as well as in Finland and parts of Eastern Europe, it hasn't gained the same level of popularity elsewhere due to limited marketing efforts. In 2004, 1C Company released a sequel titled "Space Rangers 2: Dominators."
The game offers a dynamic and open-ended experience, drawing comparisons to titles like Elite and Star Control 2. In Space Rangers, planetary trade prices fluctuate based on supply and demand, ongoing non-scripted conflicts drive the narrative, computer-controlled ships have distinct capabilities, goals, and relationships, and players have multiple paths to complete the storyline. Gameplay includes turn-based space travel and combat, optional shoot 'em up sequences, and occasional text adventure segments. Interestingly, Space Rangers was not released as a standalone game in America but was included in special edition packages of "Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators."
Gameplay:
The game's storyline revolves around a peaceful interstellar coalition facing a formidable enemy known as the Klissans, who possess organic warships. Players assume the role of a Ranger, part of a group of civilian volunteers entrusted with small ships and the mission to aid in battling, comprehending, and ultimately defeating this menacing threat.
The roots of the conflict trace back to the Gaal race, once aggressive but now wise and peaceful. They had established numerous colonies across the galaxy and developed a hyperjumper, capable of creating wormholes. Unfortunately, one of their colonies encountered the Klissan fleet, and despite attempts at communication, they were met with destruction. The Klissan mothership, Makhpella, along with their fleet, subsequently launched an invasion of the outer Gaal colonies. In a desperate bid to prevent the Klissans from tracing their route back to the Gaal territories, the Gaal colony fleet decided to destroy the remaining colonies using the hyperjumper.
Final Words:
The catalyst for these events was a Peleng captain named Rachekhan, a former commander in the Peleng fleet turned pirate. He had obtained a hyperjumper, along with secret documents and weaponry, which led to his encounter with Makhpella. Mistaking Rachekhan's pirate fleet for an adversary, Makhpella pursued them through sectors colonized by the interstellar coalition. This unwittingly provided Makhpella with knowledge of IC sectors and marked all IC races as enemies, thus initiating the war.
